Mandeville Dog Training Club

Training

Think Positive – Think Dog

We train by using positive reinforcement. This means that the dog is rewarded for performing the correct action or behaviour. Also remember that dog training is something that is to be enjoyed by both dog and handler. So please enjoy yourself while you are learning.

What to Bring for Training

These are the items you need to bring with you to training:
• Your dog must always be on collar/harness and lead.
• A bowl and water for your dog.
• Lots of treats for your dog.
• A toy to play with.
• Retrieval article which is not for play.
• Mat or small towel to be used for send away. (Not required for puppy class.)
• Small container to place treats in for send away. (Not required for puppy class.)
• Cloth or any small article for scent work. (Not required for puppy class.)
• A brush for your dog.
• Plastic bags to clean up any mess.
If your dog is ill or on heat, please do not bring him/her to training until they are well or no longer on heat.

Homework

Remember that what you put in you will get out! Everything in dog training depends on you and your dedication to building a good relationship with your dog. You will be required to practice what you are taught on a Sunday during the week. You do not have to spend large amounts of time doing homework. All you need is 5 minutes here and there to work on getting your desired results. If you want to work for longer you are more than welcome to.

Training Method

All dogs and people are different and as you progress through the club you will find that each instructor has his or her individual methods of training. Ultimately you will achieve the same goal as all the instructors work to the same basic training methods. The only difference may be in the approach to carrying out the exercise. Be open-minded and learn everyone’s method, then use the one that works best for you and your dog.

Doggie treats are a useful tool for training or any reward-based system.

Your instructor will welcome any input or questions you may have, and if he or she cannot help then the other instructors will be consulted until the best solution to your problem can be found.

Continued Training

After you have completed the puppy or beginner class you are encouraged to carry on training as there is still plenty to learn. These classes provide you with the foundation of obedience training. The classes after puppies and beginners are where you and your dog will be challenged to do more.
